Stop foreclosure assistance provided by the govenment
The government has attempted to provide stop foreclosure assistance to homeowners facing default when their mortgage loans readjust. In mid December 2007, President George W. Bush announced the HOPE Now initiative to try to stem the tide of defaulted sub-prime mortgages.

On February 12th, 2008, the Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Paulson presented "Project Lifeline". This initiative offers help for people in all types of mortgages, not just sub-prime.

In addition, the government has raised the loan limits for FHA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans as part of the Economic Stimulus package passed by Congress recently.
